Opening of the exhibition about Australians who served with Serbs in World War One and/or were decorated by Serbia for service in that war
Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne, 11 am -2 pm Friday 20th May 2022
The Serbian Ambassador, HE Rade Stefanović will open an exhibition about Australians who served with Serbs in World War One at the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne, at 11 am on Friday 20th May 2022. Two descendants of Victorians who served in Serbia and a historian will speak at the opening of this exhibition. The two Victorians whose service is being commemorated as an example of the service of some 1,500 Australians and New Zealanders who served in Serbia are: Edward Ramage, from Violet Town, who served in Serbia as part of an AIF unit and Ethel Gillingham, from Geelong, who served in Serbia as a Nursing Sister.
The exhibition, and sister exhibitions in South Australia and Queensland, display personal memorabilia from Australians who served with the Serbs.
The exhibition also features a temporary showing of artworks, objects and medals not previously displayed in Australia. Wartime sketches and paintings from Serbian and English artists, lithographs and posters from the war by prominent French artists, photographs by Serbian wartime photographers and intricate Serbian decorations awarded to Australians are on display.
The artworks are displayed in a comprehensive Exhibition Guide that is a record of the service of these Australians and the history of the Great War in Serbia.
Items on temporary display are only available for viewing on Friday 20th May 2022. The longer-term exhibit, however, will be part of the Shrine display for an indefinite period.
